    CNAME: Canonical Name

Q: What is DNS and how does it work?

A: The main function of the Domain Name System, or DNS, is to translate domain names into IP addresses so that web site's names and email addresses can be used instead of IP addresses.

For more information on the DNS system see:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name_system

Q: How long does it take to propagate new DNS settings?

A: Once the new zone file is created by our system (max 10 mins), it is uploaded to the relevant Name Server. Our Name Servers will be advertising the new information within 15 minutes. However, this information has to propagate throughout the system and it can take 4-24 hours to be fully visible around the Internet.

The amount of time taken to propagate information around the net is outside of our control, and is part of the make up of the Internet infrastructure.

Q: How do I add a PTR record to my zone file ?

A: This must be done by your ISP. Adding a PTR record to your zone file held by us will have no effect.

Whoever is authoritative for your IP address range must add the record to their DNS. Ask your ISP to escalate the call to 3rd line support.

To check your IP address owner search for the ip at http://www.ripe.net in Europe, http://www.arin.net for North America

Q: I want to use your mail servers as back-up servers

A: If you use another ISP as primary mailserver, we do not provide our servers for use as backup MX servers at this time.

Q: Google Apps Mx Records - I get the error 'invalid characters' when entering the parameters as defined by google

A: The mx records for google apps need to be entered in lower case. Also please note that the 'trailing dot' and priority number specified by google are not required for our DNS manager.

    Q: Google Verification

A: You will need to upload an HTML file to your site.

How to upload the HTML file:

To verify domain ownership by uploading an HTML file, follow these steps:

    1. Log into your Google Apps control panel at https://www.google.com/a/your_domain.com. Be sure to replace 'your_domain.com' with your actual domain name.
    2. Out of the two verification options, choose HTML upload. Google will generate a string of text that is unique to your account. Copy the string of text from your Google Apps control panel.
    3. Open your HTML editor (the application or service you usually use for editing web pages).
    4. Create a new blank HTML file and paste the string of text you just copied into your HTML file.
    5. Save the file as googlehostedservice.html.
    6. Upload googlehostedservice.html to the root directory of your website. Remember to add the file to the root directory and not the sub-folder.

How to make sure it worked:

    1. Open a new browser window.
    2. Go to your website address and include the new file name: http://your_domain_name.com/googlehostedservice.html. (Be sure to replace 'your_domain_name.com' with your actual domain name.)

You should be able to see the string of characters that you uploaded on your page displayed in your browser.

    How to verify:

    1. Return to your Google Apps account control panel.
    2. Click Verify. This will prompt Google to check for this HTML file on your domain.

    Q: Wildcard Subdomains

A: I am afraid that freeparking do not currently support wildcard sub domains.

Q: I can't ping my Domain Name - it times out.

A: We deny all ICMP traffic to our networks. This increases security and prevents Denial of Service (DOS) attacks. PING will therefore NOT return a response.

You can find more information on ICMP here:

Q: I have changed my DNS settings but they are not resolving.

A: Once the new zone file is created by our system (max 10 mins), it is uploaded to the relevant Name Server. Our Name Servers will be advertising the new information within about 15 minutes. However, this information has to propagate throughout the Internet and it can take up to 36 hours to be fully visible.

The amount of time taken to propagate information around the net is outside our control, and is part of the make up of the Internet infrastructure.

Q: My MX records don't work.

A: Make sure that your MX records reference CNAME records - not IP addresses. e.g. "mail" or "mail2". Remember that any changes to DNS may take 48 hours to propagate throughout the network.

Try the domain checker at http://www.checkdns.net/quickcheck.aspx for more information

    Q: WHOIS results appear wrong.

A: If you have re-delegated the Domain Name to another set of Name Servers then please allow 24 hours for the change to take effect before raising a support request.

If you have changed Name Servers to something other than ukdnsservers.co.uk then you will need to contact the owner of those Name Servers if you are having DNS issues.
